Former Florida Rep. Carolina Amesty seeks to have her pandemic fraud case thrown out. Magistrate Judge Robert Norway of the Florida Middle District Court in Orlando granted a motion by the U.S. Attorney’s office to push back a deadline to file an indictment or reach some other settlement in the federal case against former Republican State Rep. Carolina Amesty.
Amesty was charged on January 16th with two counts of stealing Covid-19 pandemic relief money that was intended to help struggling businesses.
“What’s unusual is that it’s been six months,” said WESH 2 legal analyst David Haas, a former assistant U.S. attorney. Haas said it’s rare for the DOJ to delay an indictment for this long. “I think that is some pretty obvious gamesmanship — to walk into the hearing, say we want more time, and then shift that way, which is fine,” Haas said.
